Our Kung Fu classes for ages 13 and up are designed to challenge students both mentally and physically regardless of age, fitness level or prior experience with martial arts. Beginners who haven’t set foot in a gym for years and seasoned martial artists alike will be pushed to improve themselves and reach new goals, however modest or ambitious those goals may be. We do not tolerate hostile, aggressive, or competitive behavior and all of our students support each other’s pursuit of greater proficiency in the venerable art of Kung Fu. While our senior students provide excellent models of the levels of skill attainable through hard work and consistent effort, beginners are encouraged to focus simply on competing with themselves. Through hard work and honest reflection, students of Laughing Dragon strive to make their own Kung Fu better each week than the week before. Classes are held in a relaxed but respectful environment where hard work and fun are not mutually exclusive.

The 90 minute classes are structured to optimize students’ training time. Mobilizing of the body’s joints is followed by a vigorous warm-up and thorough stretching. Specific Kung Fu skills are then developed through some combination of basic training, partner work, circuit training and traditional Chinese Kung Fu forms. Forms are routines comprised of Kung Fu movements and are the backbone of our martial arts system. Proficiency in these forms is one of the ways students advance through our ranking system, which involves testing for colored sashes worn with the uniforms. More advanced activities like sparring and work with weapons are reserved for higher ranked students.
Our curriculum includes forms and movements of the traditional Jow Ga and Mizong styles, as well as training in Southern Lion Dance and Dragon Dance. This rich body of martial knowledge allows us to teach unique classes that develop our students’ skills while keeping interest levels high. Students can expect to learn traditional Chinese Kung Fu in challenging and energetic classes with varied activities, knowledgeable instructors and supportive classmates. Our Sifu (chief instructor) and senior students all remember that there was a day when we, too, walked through the doors of a martial training hall for the very first time. If you’re looking for a new kind of workout to get you in shape, you’ll certainly find that at Laughing Dragon. And like those of us for whom Kung Fu has become a way of life, you may wind up finding a whole lot more.
